The original refried bean recipe my great-grandma Molly used to prepare. She always used pink beans, which I prefer, too but since they are more difficult to find nowadays, substitute pinto or black beans.

The ingredients needed to make Refried Beans … My Version:
- Make ready 1 lb bag dry pinto beans
- Prepare 2 tbsp grape seed oil
- Take 1 large diced red or white onion
- Get 2 1/2 tbsp jarred minced garlic
- Prepare 1 salt and pepper to taste
- Take 1 tbsp fresh minced cilantro ( optional )
- Prepare 1/2 cup shredded mexican cheese
- Make ready 1 water.. see directions.
- Prepare 1 1/2 tbsp mexican chili powder (or regular if u don't have it)
My family doesn't like refried beans and they were won over by the aroma that filled the house before they even took a bite. But if you prefer to cook dry beans from scratch, I have also included directions below for how to make them in the Instant Pot, Crock-Pot or on the stovetop. This simplest version of this recipe for refried beans uses bacon grease and vinegar. I know that this sounds like a strange combination, but I promise that the flavor of the vinegar gets lost in the flavor of the beans, and the hint of acidity goes particularly well with pinto beans.
Instructions to make Refried Beans … My Version:
- pick beans by taking out bad beans, rocks, dirt, etc.. rinse beans well.
- place beans in a pot with 9 cups of water.
- bring beans to a boil and lower to a simmer.
- simmer for 3 hours.. stirring frequently and adding more water as neccessary. when beans are cooked through do not add more water. let it cook down so it thick and resembling chunky refried beans.
- in a skillet place onion, oil and garlic. saute until onion is transparent and cooked through. add salt,pepper and chili powder.
- mix well. then add beans.. mash beans with rest of ingredients.
- fry and mix for 10 - 15 minutes. scraping bottom and sides. stirr a lot so it doesn't burn.
- when heated through and all mashed up. transfer to a serving bowl. sprinkle with cheese and minced cilantro.
- note: if u don't have mexican chili powder regular chili powder is fine. if u don't have cilantro u can sub for minced fresh parsely. if u don't have grape seed oil u can sub for olive oil or veggie oil.
- I forgot to take a final complete picture as I was hungry.. lol. so I just have the crappy picture up.. sorry.. ill get a good one later. :)
I used a couple of the other recipes on here for a guideline and did my own thing. It turned out so well that I thought I would share this recipe for the best refried beans. Top with grated cheese if desired. Enjoy with chips, in a burrito, etc. Remove bay leaves and season to taste with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
